It is believed Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane’s future at the club now rests on them retaining the Champions League trophy following their shock exit from Copa del Rey cup by Leganes, who 4 years ago were playing in the Spanish third tier.
With the European champions leading 1-0 from the first leg went into the game without star players Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale, as they looked to progress into the semi finals. However, when Javier Eraso levelled the aggregate score shortly before half time a few warning bells started to ring. Karim Benzema restored the lead for Real minutes into the second half but that lead didn’t last long as Brazilian midfielder Gabriel scored with 30 minutes remaining to give his side the crucial second away goal.
Real through everything they had at their neighboring minnows, but it wasn’t enough as Leganes took the win and knocked the 19-time Copa del Rey winners out.
With real out of the cup and 19 points behind Barcelona in La Liga and currently sitting in fourth place, last year’s champions only have the Champions league remaining as a realistic chance of Silverware, however, after only qualifying second in their pool behind Premier League side Tottenham Hotspurs they now face a tough Paris St Germain side in the last 16.
When interviewed following his teams defeat, Zidane said “It's a fiasco and My worst moment as a coach. I don't regret anything I did in the game, though. I take responsibility for what I do.”
Since taking over as Real Madrid boss in January 2016, their former French captain and Real Madrid player has won eight major trophies, whilst enjoying a 40 game unbeaten run in all competitions last year!
