Widnes vs Huddersfield Preview

Widnes Vikings boss Dennis Betts will look to give new recruits Tom Olbison and Tom Armstrong their debuts as they welcome Huddersfield Giants to the Select Security stadium. 2ND rower Olbison signed from Bradford over the close season after becoming a free agent, while centre Tom Armstrong has played Super League previously with St Helens, but more recently has spent three very successful years in the championship with Leigh. Unfortunately for Betts, new club captain and 1st choice half back Joe Mellor is still unavailable due to injury.

For the visitors Huddersfield, they will be looking to forget a dreadful last season, which saw them drop from being minutes away from silverware 2015, to fighting against relegation at the wrong end of the table in 2016. Coach Ross Stone has named a strong team that includes new recruits Gaskell, Clough, Mellor and Ferguson, who all made the move to Huddersfield after the collapse of the Bradford Bulls during the off season. For Scottish International Ferguson, it will be his 2nd debut for the club after leaving to join the Bulls in 2013. One notable absentee from the squad is their overseas recruit Jake Mamo, who signed from NRL team Newcastle Knights and will have to wait for his debut as he is currently side lined with a leg injury.
