The latest prediction for the Great Britian team at this years Olympics see’s them dropping four places to finish 6th overall on the final medal table.
This has come after the analysis company Gracenote used performances since Rio 2016 to predict that Team GB will finish with 42 medals in Tokyo which is considerably short of their record haul of 67 medal’s they achieved in Rio four years ago.
The current predication would see the worst medal haul since Athens back in 2004, as Team GB as steadily increased its return during the four Olympics since then.
Team GB Medals
Tokyo 2020 (Predicted) – 42
Rio 2016 – 67
London 2012 -65
Beijing 2008 – 51
Athens 2004 – 30
Sydney 2000 – 28.
This significant drop is despite UK Sport saying only last month that it was “quietly confident” Team GB would surpass the achievements of Rio.
However, Gracenote feel the loss of dominance in track cycling, artistic Gymnastics and rowing will affect the Gb Team considerably as those sports alone accounted for 22 medals in Rio nearly a third of the over all total for GB. The new predication as these sports down as generating a possible eight podium places between them all this time round.
However, one saving grace comes from the same study done six months prior to the Rio games in which the same company predicted Team GB would finish fifth with 16 golds among 48 medals.
This was easily surpassed during the Games with Team GB finishing with a record 27 golds over all earning them a rare second spot on the medals table.
