Southampton defeat, sluggish Liverpool

In last night’s 2nd EFL Cup Semi Final, Liverpool travelled to St Mary’s stadium to take on a Southampton team, that included several changes from the team that played Norwich at the weekend. Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp also rang the chances for his side that also drew 0-0 with league one team Plymouth on Sunday. Although Southampton’s form of late hasn’t been overly impressive they took the game to Liverpool from the start and with the exception of some early Liverpool pressure, Southampton had total control for the majority of the match.

Southampton took the lead 20 mins into the 1st half, when good work from Jay Rodriguez found Nathan Redmond, who calmly but the ball past Loris Kauris from 15 yards out for his 1st goal in 16 games. With all the pressure on Liverpool, it was Redmond again who could have doubled or tripled the lead before half time if not for the Liverpool Keeper Karius, who produced a number of quality saves but be the one shining light in an otherwise dismal team performance.

The Second half continued as the first finished and even with the introduction of Coutinho, they couldn’t stop the Southampton attack coming forward. With Cedric and Redmond both missing chances that would have given Southampton much more of an advantage going into the 2nd leg at Anfield. However, Klopp and his Liverpool side will feel relieved to only be a goal down, as they honestly couldn’t play much worse! However, they are still in with a chance of making the Wembley final.
