Three second half goals helped Australia qualify for their 4th world cup finals in a row with a 3-1 over South American hopefuls Honduras in Sydney!
After the first leg finished 0-0 it took Australia to the 53rd minute to break the dead lock with Aston Villa’s Mile Jedinak hitting a free kick which deflected off Henry Figueroa and into the net. Fifth teen minutes later Jedinak doubled the score with his first penalty after Bryan Acosta was judged to have handled the ball in his area, before a Johnny Palacios foul inside his own area allowed Jedinak to step up and complete his Hat trick with his second penalty of the game.
Honduras did manage a consolation goal from Maynor Figueroa late on, but the victory belonged to the Socceroo’s and with it one of the final places to next year’s world cup!
Elsewhere Italy have sacked their coach Giampiero Ventura after the Azzurri failed to reach the world cup finals for the first time since 1958. The four-time winners were knocked out 1-0 by Sweden in one of the European play off fixtures.
Ventura replaced the now Chelsea coach Antonio Conte in June 2016 but has had a horrible qualification were lost 3-0 to eventual group winners Spain and due at home to lowly Macedonia.
