In the early F.A Cup kick off on Saturday, 3rd placed Championship team Reading travelled to the ‘Theatre of Dreams’ to take on an in form Manchester United. It took less than 10 minutes for Wayne Rooney to find the net and, in doing so, he equalled Sir Bobby Charlton’s 44-year-old record of 249 goals for the club. The only difference is, it took the England and Manchester United Captain only 543 games to do so, which is 215 games quicker than Sir Bobby. This isn’t the only record Rooney has taken off the former Manchester United and England legend, in 2015 Rooney over took Charlton’s national record of 49 goals for England which now stands at 53 and counting.
After the excellent work by Martial and Mata had provided Rooney with the opportunity to open the scoring, the hosts bossed the game in every department and, shortly after combining with Rooney, Anthony Martial curled the ball into the Reading net to give the current holders a 2-0 lead. United continued to advance and missed chance after chance including a sitter to Rashford.
The second half carried on in much the same way as the first, with the Reading keeper denying Rooney his 2nd of the day. It took until the 75th minute before a Michael Carrick pass found Marcus Rashford, who scored his first in 18 games. Rashford soon doubled this after Reading keeper, Al-Hasbi, somehow managed to miss-hit the ball, sending it straight to Rashford who hammered it in from close range.
The win was Manchester’s 8th in a row and, with Hull City travelling to Old Trafford in midweek for their League Cup Semi Final first leg, and Liverpool at home next Sunday, they will be looking to keep this good form going.
