Portugal and Real Madrid captain Crisitiano Ronaldo was again named the ‘World’s best player’ at the 2017 best Fifa Football Awards in London last night. In doing so he beat Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and the world’s most expensive player Neymar from PSG.
In a season in which he helped his club to retain the World Club trophy, while scoring 2 goals in his sides 4-1 defeat of Juventus to also retain the Champions league title. In addition, his team also went on to win their domestic league La Liga for the first time in five years. After this fantastic season there is no surprise in the fact he gained 43% of the votes, with Messi coming 2nd with less than half of that with 19%.
The Women’s title was also named on the night and was awarded to Lieke Martens of the Netherlands, in a year in which the 24-year-old played a vital part in her country being named European Champions. By taking home the title, she fought of strong competition from 2016 winner Carli Lloyd of the USA and Venezuelan’s boom teenager 18 year old Denya Castellanos.
The Coach’s award saw some Premier league interest on the night as Chelsea’s Antonio Conte who lead Chelsea to the Premier League in his first season, was beaten into second place by Real Madrid’s Zinedine Zidane who lead is team to their first domestic league win in 5 years whilst also retaining the Champions League title and took a deserved 46% off the pole. Juventus boss Massimiliano Allergi who also took his team to domestic glory with a league and cup double along with reaching the Champions league final was third in the vote.
The best goal award did go to a Premier League player, with Arsenal’s Oliver Giroud taking 36% of the votes for his New Year’s Days effort in the match against Crystal Palace.
