England (12) 12
Tries: May 2 Cons: Farrell
Wales (3) 6
Pens: Patchell, Anscombe
A first half brace to England Winger Jonny May helped the reigning six nations champions defeat a stubborn and hard working Wales side 12-6 at Twickenham, therefore extending their unbeaten home record to 15 matches.
In the near freezing conditions, It only took England a few minutes to register their first try, May latching on to Owen Farrells well placed grubber kick to race behind the Welsh defence to collect the ball before sliding over the try line. Farrell was unable to convert so England were 5-0 up. Wales had their chance to close the gap Rhys Patchell sending his first penalty attempt wide, just before England increased their lead.
This time it was thanks to the skill of back rower Joe Launchbury who, after taking a cut out pass above his head, rampaged into the Welsh defence on their own line. With Patchell and Josh Adams thinking they had wrapped up the danger, Launchbury then produced a spectacular off load that found May on his inside for the winger to dive over for his 2nd. This time Farrell was on target with his conversion making it 12-0
Wales did register some points shortly before the break with Patchell knocking over a penalty, shortly after the Video ref had disallowed a welsh try, stating that Anthony Watson had marginally beat Welsh fullback Gareth Anscombe to the ball.
Despite the greater procession Wales couldn’t make it count, Scott Williams having their best chance only to be denied by England substitute Sam Underhill who shown excellent pace to catch the welsh centre before preforming a diving tackle that pulled the Welshman into touch a meter from the English try line.
Anscombe brought the welsh to within a converted try late in the game, but it was too little too late as England matched on to 2 wins from 2 with Scotland up next on 24th Feb.
