Manchester United survived a late scare as they look to keep the pressure on rivals Manchester City at the top of the premier league with a 2-4 win at Watford last night. Despite leading 0-3 with less than 15 minutes reminding, Watford struck twice to ensure there was a tense finish to the game.
United had started the game by far the better of the two teams as they strode out to a 3-0 half time lead thanks to a brace of goals from Ashley Young min way through the half and Anthony Martial. Youngs opener against his former club was an excellent finish from the edge of the box, while his second only minutes later was another stunner, this time a curling effort from a set piece 25 yards out. Not wanting to be left out, Martial provided another stunner of his own, slotting the ball into the net from 18 yards out.
The second half was played at the same frantic pace as United created chance’s only for poor execution to let them down, however Watford slowly fought their way back into the game, with Brazilian forward Richarlison nearly opening their account, only for his header to hit the crossbar. The Londoners did get their chance mid-way through the half when Watford where awarded a penalty which Troy Deeney scored to make it 3-1. Minutes later Abdoulaye Doucoure was on hand to finish off some good attacking play by the home team to make it 2-3 and send the alarm bells ringing in the United defence.
However, as Watford pushed forward for the equaliser, United caught them on the counter attack when Jesse Lingard picked up the ball in his own half and went on a run up field which ended with a stunning finish for just inside the Watford box to make it 2-4 and close the gap between United and City to 5 points at the top.
