Liverpool missed the chance to open up a three point gap at the top of Champion’s league group C as they slipped to their first defeat of the season going down 2-0 to Serbian Side red star Belgrade.
In a game that manager Jurgen Klopp side his side had “lost their Mojo”, Liverpool struggled to come back from two goals midway through the first half.
After making several changes to the side that was beaten 4-0 at Anfield only a fortnight ago, the home side dominated from the start and could have opened the scoring early as both El Fardou Ben Nabouhane and Vujadin Savic missed good opportunities, while on a rare trip towards the Red Star goal, Daniel Sturridge wasted a great chance of opening the scoring against the run of play, only to miss from only 6 yards out.
However, it wasn’t long before the home side broke the dead lock thanks to the head of Milan Povkov in the 21st giving the home side a lead they would never relinquish.
The home side made matters worse for last season’s Champions league finalists as they doubled their lead minutes later, this time taking advantage of some sloppy midfield play to hand the ball over to their hosts and again it was Povkov with the final touch, sending his powerful shot straight into the bottom corner.
The second half was all Liverpool as passes started to stick, but with last seasons top scorer Mohammed Salah (pictured) missing several chances in a half that they had 80% procession off, it was never going to be Liverpool’s night.
Manager Klopp was critical in his statements post game, referring to his team’s lost mojo and what the result means for his side;
“I saw a few games like this already and it is really difficult to find your mojo,” Klopp said.
“We made life a bit too easy. I don't say it is already serious if you lose twice but we have to make sure it will not happen again. We had a lot of moments when we could get in control of the game and we didn't do it, we just made the wrong decision.”
The result means Liverpool are now in a most win situation as Napoli’s home draw with PSG means they now have 6 points the same as Liverpool but retake top spot due to their victory when the two sides meet earlier in the competition. While French champions PSG are a point behind with a greater goal difference than both sides above them.
