Leeds sign replacemant Hooker

Leeds Sign replacement for Segeyaro

Leeds look to have sorted their hooking problem out, with the signing of Matt Purcell from Manly Sea Eagles (NRL). Purcell will come in as a straight replacement for PNG international James Segeyaro who failed to return to Leeds for Pre Season training at the beginning of the month.

Purcell, 24, joins the Rhinos after playing 15 games in 2016 for struggling Manly and before that was on the books, at Brisbane Broncos. Looking to come to Leeds to make the number 9 shirt his own, Purcell responded “Playing in England has always been something that I have wanted to do and I'm looking forward to the move.”

The decision to invest in Purcell, was forced on Leeds when this year’s midseason star signing, James Segeyaro, informed the club he would not be returning to the UK although he only signed an extension to his original contract before returning to Australia for an off season break. Although still taking legal advice over the situation with Segeyaro and putting an £250,000 value on his registration, Leeds moved quick to fill the space he left within the squad by securing Purcell’s signature.

Purcell will the Rhino's boxing day clash with Wakefield, but will hopefully arrive in the UK in the new year ahead of the new Super League season which starts in February.
