Carabao Cup holders Manchester United were sensational knock out last night by Championship side Bristol City, thanks to a Korey Smith strike late into injury time.
With less than a minute remining when Smith stroke, it wasn’t long before the majority of the sell out crowd rushed onto the pitch in celebration!
Jose Mourinho had made it clear well before kicking off that he was going to make some changes to the side that won at West Bromwich at the weekend! However, despite making a total of 10 changes the team still had players of the calibre of Paul Pogba who was returning from a 3-match suspension in midfield, along with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial up front!
It was united that had the better of the opening half, with Pogba controlling midfield they created more than enough chances to ensure the game was over before the break with Ibrahimovic and Rashford both hitting the woodwork, while Rashford also saw an effort curl agonisingly wide as the teams went in 0-0 at the break.
The second half started in much the same way the first finished, United missing another opportunity to open the scoring, before Bristol’s best player on the night Joe Bryan rocketed a shot across the face of United’s goal and into the top corner to give the home side a surprise lead.
The lead didn’t last to long as with 5 minutes Ibrahimovic equalised with an equally impressive free kick beating Bristol Keeper Luke Steele.
By now Mourinho had started to make changes and with half an hour reminding he through on Romelu Lukaku, who did make a difference and only for two out standing saves from Steele would have won the game for United.
But with time running out and the prospect of extra time on everyone’s lips, it was left to Smith with less than 60 seconds left, he found himself in procession in the United area, turned and hammered the ball past Romero in the United net to set up a dream semi-final tie against Premier League leaders Manchester City.
