After weeks of speculation Manchester United finally announced the signing of Chilean Striker Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal in a swap deal that see’s Armenian midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan go in the other direction.
Only days after rivals Manchester City dropped their interest in the 29 year old, due to his wage depends and how that may affect their team spirit, United had no such fears, agreeing to make him their best earner in a four and a half year deal believed to be worth £14 million a year after tax to the player.
Although pictures had been leaked of Sanchez taking selfies, at Old Trafford wearing a Manchester United kit, the club officially announced his arrival via twitter with him wearing the Number 7 top, whilst playing ‘Glory, Glory Man Utd’ on the piano.
Since joining Arsenal from Barcelona for £30m in July 2014, Sanchez had scored 80 goals, with last season being his most productive and accounting for nearly half with 30 in all competitions, however since missing out on a deadline day move to Manchester City during the summer, he hasn’t looked anything like the player from 12 months ago with several TV. pundits commenting on his attitude and on field demeanor.
Going in the opposite direction Mkhitaryan who is also 29, will be hoping it provides a boost for his career, after an up and down 18 months at Old Trafford. Since red devils boss Jose Mourinho paid Borussia Dortmund £26.3m for his services in July 2016, he has gone on to make 63 appearances for the club, scoring 13 goals. Unfortunately for him this season as seen him slide down the peaking order and with limited game time this season, added with reports of a break down in trust between the play and manager a move away was inevitable.
Now he’s got his move north United will be hoping it is the catalyst for a change of form, that could possible start in their FA Cup fourth round game at Yeovil town this coming Friday.
