City come from behind twice to clinch top spot and a place in the last 16.

Wigan maintain FA Cup voodoo over Manchester City

A late goal from Manchester city’s all time top goal scorer Sergio Aguero was enough to ensure his side have qualified for the last 16 of the Champions league with a game to spare.
Twice the Premier League champions had to come from behind to earn a 2-2 draw in a game which saw City boss describe their opponents Lyon as one of the toughest teams” have ever faced.

In a game in which the home side had the better first half, with Lyon missing several clear chances to open the scoring, it took until 10 minutes in to the second half before Maxwel Cornet sent his low angled drive past Ederson into the back of the net.

In true Manchester City fashion, they weren’t behind for long and levelled within seven minutes, defender Aymeric Laporte finding himself perfectly placed to finish of Raheem Sterling’s free kick. With the game at 1-1 it was Lyon who continued to push forward and regained the lead in the 81st minute thanks again to Cornet as Lyon looked to repeat their opening game defeat of Manchester City back in September.

However, City were not to let history repeat itself and levelled the scores again, this time within two minutes as Aguero reacted quickest and in a crowded area managed to flick his header past Lyon keeper Anthony Lopes and into the net making it 2-2 and securing City’s top spot in group F.
After the game Guardiola was delighted for his side to have clinched top spot with a game remaining, while also full of praise for his side’s opponents saying;

“We are so delighted and so happy, we played one of toughest teams we've ever faced. They are physical, strong, they counter-attack incredible.
“We reacted after 1-0 and 2-1 and we are in the final stages. This was our target, now we must try to get a point to finish first in the group stage, but it is so important to go through.”

The result means as it stands City will steer clear of the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus and Bayern Munich who all currently top the table while Lyon who would have also secured second spot but for a late winner for Shakhtar in their game against Hoffenhiem will now did at least a point when the pair meet in the final match on December 12th.
