Chelsea’s new manager Maurizio Sarri is still sweating over who will be his first choice keeper ahead of the new Premier League season as is obvious choice Thibaut Courtois failed to report to training yesterday after his World Cup exploits.
Since earning some rave reviews with his performances for Belgium in the World Cup, which saw the 26 year old named the best keeper in the tournament, he has been linked with a move away from Stamford bridge with Real Madrid thought to be every interested.
Courtois who signed for the Stamford Bridge outfit back in 2011 from Belgium side Genk and was immediately loaned out to Atletico Madrid where he spent three years in the Spanish Capital and still has children their living with his ex-partner.
However, since returning he has made the number 1 shirt his own, clocking up 154 games for Chelsea, while keeping 58 clean sheets and conceding a mere 154 goals,
When interviewed before the weekends charity shield defeat to Manchester City, Sarri was then unsure if his keeper would be staying, stating;
“At the moment Courtois is the goalkeeper of Chelsea. I don't know in the future. It depends on the club, it depends especially on him, but I hope Courtois will be our goalkeeper. I want to hear from Courtois tomorrow (Monday). I want only players with a very high level of motivation.”
On a more positive note, Belgium team mate Eden Hazard, who has also been heavily linked with a move away from Stamford bridge, with Real Madrid also interested following his own World cup performances which saw him pick up the Runner up award for player of the tournament, did report to Chelsea’s training ground fit and ready to play on his first day back.
So where does this level Chelsea? With Courtois rejecting a new deal to stay with the Blues and his value at an all time high due to his world cup performances, now may be the best time to cash in on the Belgium International or risk losing him on a free at the end of the season! Chelsea have been aware of Courtois’s wishes to return to Spain for a while and are believed to have informed Real that no deal will be given the green light until they find a replacement and with only 2 days left of the Transfer window anything could happen.
