With only one defeat in eleven matches between the pair at the emirates it was some ‘lucky’ decisions that lead to Shkodran Mustafi opened the scoring with his first of the season, managing to head the ball past Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris after the Gunners were awarded a rather contentious free kick, while Mustafi himself appeared to be off side.
Although Arsenal didn’t need any ‘Luck’ for their next goal five minutes later when Alexis Sanchez was on hand by the far post to finish some fine team play by the home side.
The result see’s Arsenal move up to 6th place in the league level with Liverpool and only a point behind their rivals Tottenham who hold fourth spot.
Just above Arsenal in the league Liverpool kept the pressure on the top four with their third straight league win as they accounted for a lack lustre Southampton 3-0 at Anfield.
The Reds Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah kept up his fine form helping himself to two first half goals that saw the home side take a lead they never looked like losing. His first came on the half hour mark, curling the ball into the back of the net from the edge of the box after Southampton defender Dusan Tadic had carelessly lost possession.
His second came ten minutes later, timing his run brilliantly to connect with a Philippe Coutinho pass and then placing the ball past the Saints keeper Fraser Forster taking Salah’s goal tally to 9 in his first 12 league games at the club.
Liverpool finished of the match midway through the second half when Coutinho turned goal scorer, after reacting quickest to Roberto Firmino’s saved effort to poke the ball into the back of the net making it 3-0.
The result leaves Liverpool in 5th place in the premier league, above arsenal on goal difference and hot on the tails of Tottenham who only have a point more than them in 4th place.
