Tonight, see’s the start of the final round of the rugby league Qualifiers in which the bottom 4 from super league meet the top four of the Championship to see who will be playing in what division next year. This season we have seen three teams form outside of the traditional rugby league areas fight for one of the three automatic places given to the top three in the final table, while 4th and 5th fight it out one last time in the “Million Pound” match for the fourth Super league spot.
This year’s as been full of twists and turns that has seen at least one Championship side guaranteed promotion with Widnes Vikings ending their seven year stint in the top flight. The other super league teams, last year’s champions Leeds Rhino’s, Salford and Hull KR have been left clinging for survival as the championship sides from London, Toulouse and Toronto have given everything over the past few weeks.
Leeds currently sit on top of the table with 10 points with Salford, Toronto and Hull Kr in second, third and fourth respectively all on 8 points with goal difference separating them. While Toulouse in fifth and London in sixth both have 6 points.
With so many permutations of how the league could finish depending on who wins and who loses and by how many any of the 6 could in theory still make the top three with Leeds possible the safest, while Toulouse could be the side that misses out as they have the hardest game travelling to Salford Red Devils.
However we will try!
Leeds Rhino’s- despite being last years champions this is the second time in three years Leeds have found themselves in the Qualifiers. They sit at the top of the pile on ten points and should be save, however should they lose by 32 points or more to Toronto and Hull KR register a high score in their game against relegated Widnes, the Rhino’s could see themselves in the Million Pound game next week.
Toronto – their future is still in their hands, should they beat Leeds by 32 then they are automatically in Super league next season, win by any margin and they would be very unlucky not to get in automatically, depending on Hull KR result. The likely hood is they will be in next weeks Million pound play off!
Toulouse – they possible have the hardest task with a trip to Salford. Defeat would likely mean they finish sixth and their season is over However, victory along with Toronto and Hull KR defeats and London not securing a big win at Halifax and they are in automatically. The most realistic result will see them travelling to Canada for next week’s Million pound game.
Hull KR– Having gained promotion via this route last year Hull KR know what they have to do this weekend, beat Widnes and unless if Salford or Toronto slip up they remain in Super league. Their best advantage is that they play Sunday afternoon and by then will now exactly what they need to do before they kick off.
Salford- Simple they beat Toulouse they stay in Super league!! Defeat and they are relying on Toronto or Hull KR to slip up otherwise they could be in the Million Pound game.
London- They travel to bottom club Halifax who haven’t picked up a point, however a top three place is possible it is extremely unlikely due to the number of things they require to go in their favour, however beat Halifax and hope Salford beat Toulouse and they are in the Million Pound game!!
